Dropping Ugly – If It Were Me |

Richmond, VA-based band Dropping Ugly dropped their first single of the year titled, “If It Were Me” – a heartfelt acoustic song about relationships, love and loss. The band members Simon Anderson (vocals/guitars) and Abbey Balentine (drums) are known for their timeless music that explores the recovery of live music and the rebirth of rock and roll. Following the release of their 2018 album “Everything Is Easy”, the duo started putting out a constant stream of singles from 2020 and now are all set to release their second album this year!

A fingerstyle acoustic guitar progression introduces Simon’s emotive vocal melody as the track starts. “The prettiest girl I’m watching turned another page / Arm in arm into the state park, graduation day / Will she make me nervous? / I shiver and shake “. Simon creates a cosy atmosphere with just his voice and a guitar, taking the listener to a place where one can feel a warm embrace. His honest storytelling style translates well into his lyrics and is well supported by the mellow instrumentation throughout the track.

As it progresses, Simon is accompanied by soft harmonies that further enhance the emotive feel of “If It Were Me”. He grabs your attention with a beautifully written chorus melody that seems to fit in perfectly. It’s one of those tracks that remind you of adolescent, high-school love – warm, inviting, new, and very special. Dropping Ugly captures many emotions in their music and their latest release is a great example of their “timeless” work.
