In their own words, Scarlet Mill is a “smouldering peat fire”, fuelled by influences from dreamwave and European Americana. Their debut album came out to much fanfare and garnered them a following they have only since then built upon, all while working on their sound– and of it, we delve into “Driftwood” today– keep reading for my thoughts!
Ringing bold and proud with the electric guitars, with the chords forming melodies within themselves, “Driftwood” gets off to a solid start– slow, well-paced vocals and lyrics, with the keys in the background laying down a mysterious allure of dark energy, which are echoed by the lyrical themes– these all form part of the casserole here as the energy slowly builds and culminates in the form of warm synth pads that make way for the solid, groovy bassline laid atop the steady-paced drums. This all comes together to create the kind of atmosphere that would leave one hypnotized and bobbing their head to the rhythm in hapless wonder.

The energy never goes above and beyond so as to overwhelm– yet has its highs and highers; with the low vocal layers in the chorus forming just the right kind of low-end glue to hold this song together excellently well; and as we step into the next verse, we’re treated to a further evolution; with the keys in the background seemingly getting more and more potent as the bars go by; and I’m a fan.

In a song like this, the production, and the sound design either make or break the track altogether; and here, make it does. All the instruments come together with this kind of effortless elegance that would put some full orchestras to shame; and as we step into the latter half of the song, we’re treated to a gentle yet flowing solo that brings all things about “Driftwood” into perspective for me; meant to be this grand-yet-understated ballad, melodically driven to the point where the melodies get stuck in your head, and you’re only left wishing this song wouldn’t end. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is where you reach for the repeat button, only to do that very thing a hundred times over.
