Listening to ‘Idling’ by Deaf Radio feels like watching a long-exposure photograph develop in real-time; it captures complicated feelings in the tendrils of a dark room. Hailing from Athens, Greece, the four piece band is always evolving in their sound, moving from their raw guitar sound into something more atmospheric and introspective. Their latest offering, an atmospheric alternative record with a post-punk influence explores the “quiet, overlooked phases of a relationship” in the band’s own words.

Sonic Elements
‘Idling’ evokes the feeling of a calm chemical bleed – where the good and the bad memories dissolve into one another like a single, unremarkable yet evocative hue. Deaf Radio’s instrumentation here mirrors the mechanical process of a developing tray that forms the image. The reverb heavy guitars function like light trails that streak across the dark backdrop, giving the song its atmospheric features while The steady, pulsating bass and drumbeats, meanwhile, anchor the track just like the rhythmic shaking of the tray. All of these sonic elements ensure that the song sounds like it’s “simmering”.
Deaf Radio maintains this “simmering” restraint throughout the song which is heard in the contrast between the brooding verses that feel like an under-exposed image and the chorus which feels like a saturated bloom. The chorus is reminiscent of a surge of light in the red room, where the music textures become denser, sharpening the colours of the song while still retaining its restrained vibe. Instead of breaking into an explosive final chorus, ‘Idling’ chooses to bask in the melodic stasis.

The lack of a so-called “big finish” is what drives the message of the song home, capturing the moment the relationship fades away without fanfare. The band finally leaves the audience with a blurred long-exposure image of the memories that endured.
