‘Cocoon’ by Mike and Mandy is an Alternative Indie-Pop Track that Tells The Story of a Reluctant Lover

Cocoon’ by Mike and Mandy is a dreamy, calm alternative indie-pop that tells us the story of a reluctant lover. Its lines follow a couple at an impasse, where one seems more keen than the other to keep the relationship going. There’s thinly-veiled frustration disguised behind an almost bright guitar and synth combo, the song being from the perspective of the lover that wants to try and make things work.

‘Cocoon’: Withering Flowers

The narrator of ‘Cocoon’ urges their lover to give the relationship a shot, holding onto the hope that maybe something could be salvaged somehow. The opening lines feel like they foreshadow where this could end, comparing this dying relationship to an underwatered flower.

“You didn’t water, I didn’t either, (this) flower fades and dies…”.

The song’s narrator wants to pull their lover out of their comfort zone, to a space where the two of them could build something new and whole. But the reality of this situation seems to be that this relationship builds on moments of broken trust and heartache. The singer exclaims before the second refrain, “…all of a sudden, trust is broken. How are you surprised?…”.

‘Cocoon’ holds out hope at a time of frustrating hopelessness, knowing that despite it being “…a long long time to goodbye..”, there’s still scope for hope. The song’s second line highlights this, after seemingly foreshadowing where this relationship could end up. “…If you lose hope, we might not survive…”.

The narrator knows that the only way to salvage this bond is to do some heavy lifting. “…Oh, I’ve got to fix you somehow. Got to get you out of your comfortable cocoon…”. But in the end, what the first line foreshadows seems to come to pass anyway.

“…If you don’t water, and I don’t either,

This flower fades dies…”.

In conclusion, ‘Cocoon’ by Mike and Mandy is a dreamy indie-pop track that fights but fails to hold onto potential love.
