From Punk to Disco: ‘Rogue Oligarch’ by Brudini is a Wild Ride Worth Taking

After a career in finance, Brudini turned to music, crafting songs that reflect a life of journeying and inner struggle. His compositions, which are enhanced by poetic poetry and classical melodies, traverse the contentious boundaries between noise and avant-garde. Celebrated by NYC punk legend Danny Fields and featured on BBC6, RadioX, and Frank Skinner’s show, Brudini’s debut LP, From Darkness, Light, was born from an unexpected friendship with Californian poet Chip Martin at Soho’s Society Club. Their spontaneous collaborations evolved into a profound partnership, intertwining seven of Brudini’s songs with five of Martin’s poems, creating a tapestry of loss, longing, and cosmic solace. His long-term band includes double bassist Casper Hoedemaekers and drummers Derin Bayhan, Siemy Di, and Livio Polisano, alongside past collaborators like Lulu Gainsbourg and Andy Bell of Erasure.

Brudini’s “Rogue Oligarch” is an impressive display of genre-blending proficiency that manages to feel both nostalgic and fresh. The track’s retro atmosphere is established immediately, creating an engaging foundation that continues to evolve throughout the song.

The arrangement is particularly clever. Those eerie background sounds add mystery and depth, while the saxophone’s entrance around the 50-second mark brings a sophisticated jazz element to the mix. The production maintains clarity despite the multiple layers, allowing each element to shine without cluttering the soundscape.

Brudini’s vocal performance is a standout element. The low-tone delivery adds to the mysterious atmosphere while remaining effortlessly breezy, perfectly complementing the track’s varied musical elements. It’s this vocal work that helps tie together the song’s different stylistic shifts.
