From the get-go, the title track sets the tone for a compelling musical trip. With its groovy rhythm and delightful violin, it’s a cheerful anthem that instantly uplifts the vibes. “More Than You’ll Ever Know” slows down the pace, delivering a heartfelt country ballad that tugs at the heartstrings. An emotive delivery makes for a soulful experience. “Camacho Hill” transports listeners to the Wild West with its vivid instrumentation and haunting vocal harmonies. The strings add depth to the storytelling, painting a picture of rugged landscapes and untold adventures.
A standout moment arrives with Berggoetz’s cover of Johnny Cash’s “Folsom Prison Blues,” featuring the soulful vocals of Alison Wahl. This is raw blues with acoustic guitars with minimal percussion. There’s a certain heaviness despite the sparse arrangement. One of my favourite tracks from the album. “Your Heart and Me” with its fingerstyle acoustic guitar, complemented by delicate strings, ethereal vocal harmonies, and some falsetto, is a slow burner.
“Born to Run” sees Brian Berggoetz offering his heartfelt interpretation of Bruce Springsteen’s classic anthem. His authentic delivery shines through, making it a standout track that resonates long after the final chord fades. Another great album pick. Closing out the album is a poignant rendition of U2’s “MLK,” once again featuring the hauntingly beautiful vocals of Alison Wahl. We hear beautiful vocal harmonies and ambient sounds almost entirely relying on the vocal harmonies. An atmospheric finale!
Berggoetz’s warm vocals and simple guitar shine in this record, captivating listeners with every note. The good blend of vocal harmonies, violins, and strings provides a good topping to the organic sound of the acoustic guitars which dominate the arrangement.
Brian Berggoetz is a solid musical storyteller. Get ready to embark on some “Magical Times” through the heartland of Americana with him as your guide.
