“Baddie Wine” by KOTC Clan: An Afropop Carnival of Sound

KOTC Clan, short for Kings of the Clout Clan, is a musical ensemble comprising rappers and vocalists like KOTC Drew, KOTC Vibe, KOTC Gamal, and the KOTC music band. They have members from New York, Nigeria, Trinidad & Tobago and the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. Their most recent offering is “Baddie Wine.” How do they fare this time? Keep reading for my thoughts!

The whole song has this atmosphere, this kind of space that I would describe as expansive, big, and stadium-like and this is apparent from the get go; which only helps the overall festive mood and fervour of this track. There is a lot going on from the very start of the song, immediately setting the jive right and getting you grooving– and that is a very, very good thing.

The vocals are very distinctly Caribbean/African, with all the good things that come with it– smooth, well-executed, and more importantly, the instrumentation is built around these very elements, which yields the vocals a lot of purpose, in becoming the focus of this track. The style, as a whole, reminds me of one of my most favourite tracks ever, “Sugar” by anatu.

There is power in the production with a lot of fun and upbeat melodies, that all tie together quite nicely and propel the themes that the clan talks about through the song. “Baddie Wine” would be the best way to describe them, I would say. The choruses are well-written, with the harmonies in the background also tastefully chosen, and it all comes full circle with the mix and master, which is done with a great blend of creative exploration and textbook known-good things.
