‘New Lover’ opens the album, a dark, intimate, contemplative space. The vocals whisper with blues, casting its sensual magic, mischievous thoughts. A sentimental neoclassical line is superimposed with moments of Latin acoustic grooves, rustic country, sensual and contemporary influence. So many dimensions to the story, the relationship shared, the history of it all.
If New Lover is an icy, slick and classy blues act, ‘When You Close Your Eyes’ is a warm, feel-good and full song. The weight of the vocals, the call of the instrumentals, and the gentle trickle of the guitar work is so wholesome. ‘Filling Up the Spaces’, follows in a similar energy cycle. With mellow reggae grooves, fresh melodies and slice of life narratives, it paints a sweet picture of healing, rediscovering joy, and moving on.
‘More Time’ flows from reggae, opening into a contemporary country folk flush. It is so expansive. The blues are deep, travelling as it does into the crevices of thought and feeling. ‘Three Quarter Time’ is a light flow, a breezy interlude connecting its predecessors to the upcoming track. It is reminiscent of Joni Mitchell vocally and The Corrs instrumentally. Interacting with a sweet harmony that you can’t get enough of.
‘Long Sleeves’ and ‘Carousel of Colors’ are both slower songs. The former is built with acoustics, quirky and chunky with classical European influences and theatrical storytelling. And finally with the concluding track, she weaves a happy scene, a feel good sonic lift. The soundscape is made with a soft circling rhythm; perhaps to emulate the movement of the theme. The romance, the love, the lovers, the memories, the joy, and the colors, all of it forms in the listener’s mind as if it all belongs to them. Listen Now!
