We interviewed Mayumi Yamazaki, and this is what the artist has to say:

1. What was your inspiration behind creating the song “Rainyman”? Was it a spontaneous creation or something you crafted methodically?

There is a sacred place in Nasu, Japan, where a large rock is enshrined. While visiting there, a traditional Japanese melody came to me — that became the starting point for “Rainyman.” From there, I imagined a story of a father and son connected by rainy days, and gradually blended that narrative with the melody to create the song.

2. Who inspires you the most from the music industry? Do you look up to someone professionally?

Coldplay. I admire the way they create entire worlds through their music. Their emotional expression and sonic landscapes have had a big impact on me.

3. How has your musical journey been so far? Has it been a smooth sail or a bumpy ride with loads of lessons?

I’ve been lucky to meet kind and talented people throughout my journey. At the same time, I’ve experienced many failures and missed opportunities. But each of those moments taught me something important. I’m still learning today.

4. What does your creative process look like?

It usually starts with playing the piano freely. As I play, melodies and images begin to appear. I then build chord progressions and add lyrics to match the emotion. Once the structure is there, I think about the arrangement based on the world the song seems to express.

5. Define your music for someone who is stepping into your musical world for the first time.

Cinematic pop that evokes imagery — music that paints emotional scenes and atmospheres.

6. According to you, should art have purpose, or do you believe in “art for art’s sake”?

I think both are valid. Art doesn’t always need a specific purpose, but if it has one, that’s fine too. What matters is that art stays free — that’s where its power lies.
