Opeth is back with their first album in five years, The Last Will & Testament, set to drop on October 11th. The Swedish progressive-metal legends have teased fans with the lead single, “§1,” which you can stream now.
This marks Opeth’s 14th studio album, following their 2019 release, In Cauda Venenum. The band will hit the road for a North American tour, starting the same day as the album’s release in Milwaukee and wrapping up on October 31st in San Francisco. Tickets are available now.
The Last Will & Testament is a concept album set in the post-World War I era, revolving around a wealthy, conservative patriarch whose will reveals shocking family secrets. Frontman Mikael Åkerfeldt said, “I love this record. I have to say it (write it). Maybe I’m proud even? There are some familiar ingredients in there I suppose… I’m a bit in awe of what we did with The Last Will and Testament. It feels like a dream.”
Fans will be excited to hear Åkerfeldt’s death metal growls return on “§1,” after several albums of clean vocals. The album features tracks titled “§1,” “§2,” “§3,” and so on, ending with “A Story Never Told.”
This album also introduces new drummer Waltteri Väyrynen, who joined the band in 2022. Åkerfeldt praised Väyrynen, saying, “I knew Walt was a great drummer, but I didn’t know how good he was… We can play. But we sat there at Rockfield Studios, and he just was doing these insane, technical songs in one take.”
In addition to the eight-track LP album, Opeth has also announced a European tour for Winter 2025.
