Shiverwood Shade Shifts the Alt-Rock Scene with ‘Escaping Darkness’

Shiverwood Shade is an emerging Indian alt-rock, nu-metal band known for its music that combines the best of early 2000s nu-metal aggression with contemporary electronic elements. With a sound that thrives on post-hardcore, industrial, EDM, and synthwave, their musicality embraces a cinematic atmosphere seamlessly.

Recently, Shiverwood Shade released a full-length album called ‘Escaping Darkness’, an 11-track album that embraces the classic nu-metal appeal with modern electronica, whilst exploring deeply introspective themes of struggle, resilience and transformation. An enchanting metal feel combines with the high energy of heavy rock to create an impact that’s simply unforgettable.

We recently interviewed Shiverwood Shade; here’s what they have to say:

1. Your album ‘Escaping Darkness’ paints a psychological landscape through stunning gothic textures and alt-rock that feels fresh to the ears. Tell us about the journey of curating something like this.

Curating Escaping Darkness was a deeply therapeutic but intense journey of self-reflection. We wanted to move past standard nu-metal tropes and build a cinematic, heavy, and haunting atmosphere.

The process began by blending aggressive guitar riffs with cold, dark industrial and synthwave textures. Moving from Gwalior to Kolkata in 2022 drastically shifted our perspective. The city’s historic, moody, and artistic environment naturally bled into our production. We spent countless hours fine-tuning the electronic layers to ensure they didn’t just sit in the background but actively drove the psychological narrative of each track.

2. How do you aim to utilise the art of music to the benefit of your listeners? Do you think that music has some special purpose?

We firmly believe music’s ultimate purpose is catharsis and connection. It acts as a universal mirror for emotions that are often too difficult to put into words.

Through our music, we want listeners to feel validated in their darkest moments. We don’t just write about pain; we write about the process of moving through it. If a heavy breakdown or a haunting synth melody helps someone release pent-up anxiety or feel less alone in their struggle, then our music has fulfilled its highest purpose. It is a tool for survival and emotional release.

3. Tell us about your favorite project that you have worked on so far.

Without a doubt, Escaping Darkness is our favorite and most defining project to date.

It represents a literal and creative rebirth for Shiverwood Shade. Rebuilding the band with a completely new lineup after a 1,500-kilometer relocation was an immense challenge. Putting all of that uncertainty, displacement, and creative hunger into this specific body of work makes it incredibly special. Winning an Inspiring Music Award for it was just validation for the blood, sweat, and tears the entire new team poured into it.

4. What is the idea behind “Escaping Darkness”?

The core concept of the album is the psychological battle against one’s own internal demons.

“Darkness” represents depression, anxiety, toxic cycles, and the feeling of being trapped in your own mind. “Escaping” isn’t presented as a clean, easy victory. Instead, it is a messy, violent, and continuous fight. The album tracks the trajectory of someone hitting rock bottom, confronting their shadows, and clawing their way back toward the light. It is an anthem for resilience.

5. If someone is listening to your music for the first time, what would you tell them? Give them a little introduction.

Welcome to the heavy, moody side of alternative metal.

We are Shiverwood Shade from India. We mix the raw, aggressive energy of early 2000s nu-metal and post-hardcore with modern electronic, industrial, and synthwave soundscapes. Expect heavy riffs, driving electronics, and deeply emotional themes. If you love music that is both intensely heavy and highly atmospheric, turn off the lights, put your headphones on, and let the sound carry you.

6. Which track or tracks are your favorite on the album and why?

While we love the album as a cohesive unit, “Crawling Back” and “Pulling Away” stand out as band favorites.

“Pulling Away”: This song holds a massive sonic contrast that we love playing with. It transitions from melodic, melancholic verses to an explosive, cathartic chorus. It embodies the exact tug-of-war dynamic that defines the entire album.

“Crawling Back”: This track perfectly captures our sonic identity. It seamlessly bridges heavy guitar work with dark EDM elements. It feels like a relentless emotional panic attack set to music.
