“Zaraita Bushi”, by Suzumeno Tears: Bringing cultures together!

Suzumeno Tears is a Tokyo-based duo whose name blends the elegance of “Suzume” (sparrow in Japanese) with the subtle resilience of spare change. Miyuki Sato, a Bulgarian folk specialist and avid folk dancer, joins forces with Agatha, a singer-songwriter influenced by the Beatles and proud owner of DOYASA! Records. Keep reading for my thoughts on their magic on their latest single, “Zaraita Bushi”!

The sound of traditional Japanese music is one that has, steadily, been gaining a strong foothold in the general music industry worldwide– and it’s always fresh and exciting to visit a place so rich and lush with culture with the medium of music, and “Zaraita Bushi”, quite literally translated to “washboard”, accomplishes that excellently well. The whole song has this easygoing, soothing quality to it that still retains an element of drama and life, and remains front and centre in your ears, refusing to fade away into the background like white noise– and I like that in music.

The production is a blend with a steady string line in the background that holds the song together from a melodic base, letting the vocalists, Miyuki Sato and Agatha, shine through with their talents, and their signature reharmonisations of traditional Japanese songs. The soft, jazzy drums and mallet instruments in the background resonate quite gracefully and dance with the bass, to come together into something quite special.

When it comes to traditional music, it really is a glimpse into the lives of the people who continue to preserve the art, as well as the people who originated the art. For that, “Zaraita Bushi” gets my two-thumbs-up recommendation! Check out the track here:
