‘Waves’: The Strength of Thought
Acoustic guitars lead the song’s instrumentation, while its lyrics do most of the heavy-lifting. The lines seem to be a string of thoughts, framed as though they trinkle in one after the other. Each line a thought fully realised, at times paradoxical, but fully bodied all the same.
‘Waves’ deccribes someone who at times feels “…small, smaller than before…” but still finds the courage to “…carry on…”. “…You do a lot,..but are not that strong…”. The waves in themselves play a paradoxical role. They push people down while also lifting them up, almost as though they are some proof of strength.
“…The waves (are) crashing against the ground,
It hits your face and brings you down.
The waves will smash you on the chest,…
…Will give you an embrace…”.
Though they knock you down, they also give you the strength to get back up too.
After this overwhelming rush of relentless emotion, or “…when the tide is low..”, the singer urges their subject to slow down with this tide. “…Keep it simple, write a song…”. The lyrics urge the listener to “…keep holding onto their memories…”.
This sentiment seems to be highlighted by the way the lyrics stream out, reflecting the way thoughts seem to pop up and vanish in a flash. ‘Waves’ by Tija gives its stream of consciousness narration a space of expression that seems to resonate and connect with the way thoughts pop-up, build and form.
The minimal instrumentation gives the song’s lyrics a space to shine and showcase an optimistic, hopeful yet contradictory perspective on hope and strength. These qualities make the song a compelling listen.
