Seema Farswani revives the indie rock flourish with ‘Born to Fly’

Seema Farswani has returned with a beautiful new single that harnesses hope, courage and opportunity for girls and women around the world. This anthem comes at an extremely difficult time-when appalling crimes against women are rampant and the world seems to have descended to a degree of callousness that is heartbreaking. This track, blending culture, powerful themes and an even more powerful voice is the kind of strength we need to focus on and joy we need to spread. This one is called Born to Fly.

A simple moment for equity and equality

Like all of Seema Farswani’s music, this one too is rich in collaboration and experimentation. It is created all the way from Singapore in collaboration with artists in Mumbai, namely Rishabh Sharma and Ananya Wadkar, Sharma is a talented guitarist, composer and producer who is active across Bollywood and has a distinct rock sound in his compositions. This is something that gives the Western and Hindustani blend its famous rise, and Seema’s vocals seem to glide above them with power, hope and determination. Rishabh Sharma and Seema Farswani have co-produced this track, and the confluence of styles stands out.

It also has parts from Ananya Wadkar, an incredible neo-classical vocalist and sitar artist. Her playing brings an ethereal cultural touch to the track, along with vocals that are the perfect weighted balance to Seema’s voice. Singapore-based classically trained vocalist Shania Tan adds harmonies and vocal frills as well, as Brandon Leo gives us a gorgeous, rounded mastering giving accents to the right parts.

Seema Farswani thought about this concept during The Voices Unseen, a charity concert held in Singapore in May that supports people with visual impairments and women’s empowerment. A moving moment felt through the song, it is a moment of realisation where a very simple ask has become a complicated dialogue for no reason. Respect, love and restoration of certain balance in this world.

We want to see a world where girls and women feel safe, seen and respected. What has made this take centuries are facets extremely weak. Seema Farswani soars in this track the way people should be seeing women soar. To have access to a dream, to be able to walk, run and achieve more than they ever have before. We’re pretending like we’re hiding their wings, but like this song shows us-they are born to fly:
