“SCUM” by Weirdoe: Aggressive hip-hop, done right

Nortampton-based Weirdoe’s latest offering, SCUM, is a raw and unrestrained journey into the depths of the artist’s psyche. The album’s five tracks are a blistering assault of hard-hitting beats and aggressive verses, all delivered with Weirdoe’s signature brutal honesty– keep reading for my thoughts!

From the opening track, “CHIT CHAT,” it’s clear that Weirdoe is not here to mince words. He paints a vivid picture of a world gone mad, where chaos reigns supreme. The track’s relentless energy sets the tone for the rest of the album, never letting up for a moment. On “HOTEL CECIL,” Weirdoe delves into his own personal demons, confronting his darkest fears and insecurities with unflinching honesty. The track’s raw emotion is palpable, and it’s clear that Weirdoe is not afraid to lay bare his soul for the world to hear.

“P4” and “MONGREL” continue the album’s descent into darkness, with Weirdoe’s lyrics becoming increasingly aggressive and confrontational. The tracks’ heavy beats and distorted 808s create a sense of urgency and claustrophobia, further immersing the listener in Weirdoe’s troubled world. The album closes with “BAD CHOICES,” a reflection on the mistakes that have led Weirdoe to where he is today. The track is both remorseful and defiant, as Weirdoe acknowledges his failings while refusing to be defined by them.

The production takes on a variety of avatars through SCUM, dancing effortlessly between the ominous pianos on “MONGREL”, to the harder drill-style on the closer, “BAD CHOICES”. The adlibs are injected very smartly, with the stops in the production to really yield this album a whole lot of power, with Weirdoe’s delivery and flow just serving as the icing on cake. This is all held together really well with the mix, which takes on a properly aggressive outlook, with the highest amount of energy laser-focused at the centre of the sphere, with great bounce on the hi-hats that serve to elevate this album only to further heights. Creative and technical decisions strike a rather great balance with themselves here, with the end result leaving me feeling rather chuffed.

SCUM is a powerful and disturbing album that will leave a lasting impression on its listeners. It’s a journey into the depths of human despair, but it’s also a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Weirdoe is an artist who is not afraid to confront his demons, and his music is all the more powerful for it. Check out SCUM by Weirdoe here!
