“Groomer” by Saoirsegrainne is the latetst track from her album WOOL & WOE. This is a dark pop, electropop, R&B ,and alternative pop track. Her work is characterized by layered electronic elements and emotional vocals. She has experience performing in bands and solo, and her style blends modern pop, rock, and gothic influences. The first thing you notice is the artwork features two sheep heads with Roses in the eyes which is striking. Of course, her visual language is rooted in a dark ande southern gothic aesthetic.
The song’s theme is about deception, innocence lost, and addresses issues of grooming and abuse. There is much pain and vulnerability expressed in the vocal peformance by Saoirsegrainne here. Set to a slow steady bear, the production here in relatively minimal but sets a mood for a slow to mid-tempo pop rock power ballad in style. The vocal performance is well done and hard-hitting and its pushed into prominence due to the the snappy drum groove with a nice snare.
A very attractive organ sustains the chords that form the arrangements, along with some really apt layers of production. She sure has some chops, as evident in how she pushes her voice towards the outro. The ending also features some interesting, eerie production elements and voice samples with The chorus hook here making the song memorable.
The production uses layered effects and echo to build a moody atmosphere. It reminded me of the pop artist Raye. Each verse adds to a feeling of tension. I liked that the style here blends modern pop with a gothic influence with the vocals remaininig expressive throughout and the sound is polished but keeps a sense of raw emotion. With “GROOMER”, Saoirsegrainne here dares to be vulnerable and crafts a piece of art that would you somber and introspective.
