“Sad Times” by Grace & Moji: Quirky, anthemic alt-pop

Grace Hong and Martin Wave, collectively known as Grace & Moji, are an artist/producer duo based in Los Angeles. They enjoy delving into themes of love, artistic expression, and personal growth within their relationship. Their music is characterized by sincere storytelling, unconventional lyrics, and rich musical compositions that form many an entertaining listen. Grace and Martin’s distinct backgrounds intersect as they embark on a shared journey of self-discovery and genuine self-expression– and on their latest single, “Sad Times”, they fare quite nicely for themselves. Keep reading for my thoughts!

As is trademark for the duo at this point, the production brings in quirky elements from the very beginning, with piano rolls in the beginning sharing the stage with powerful vocals that make statements right from the get go. As we start progressing further into the song, a half-rapped, half-anthemic sung style takes over, which forms quite an interesting combination of elements that I quite loved listening to.

I would be remiss to forget noting the instrument choices across “Sad Times”– especially the percussion section around the middle interlude of the song, that give the song quite an expansive, big-room feel. The wafty, luscious reverbs form the perfect soundstage for the occasion, leaving me impressed. The percussion, too, stays upbeat and perfectly in sync with the vocalists, driving the song forward with an infectious amount of energy.

“Sad Times” is a great song, no doubt– and the various things in production scattered all over the runtime, serving as pieces of ear-candy should you chance upon them, all add to that. The creative vocal processing with gates, dual-tracking, and harmonies all add to the experience.

In conclusion, there is no denying the kind of great music Grace and Moji are up to– and “Sad Times” stands as a testament to that. This song gets my two-thumbs-up recommendation, and you should check out the track here:
