‘Mermaid Smiled’ by Andrew Schneider is an Alternative/Indie Track that Tells its Story Through Sound

Mermaid Smiled’ by Andrew Schneider is an alternative indie track that uses its soundscape to recreate vague impressions of memories. This while triggering a sense of imagination in the listener. The song’s soundscape holds in it a sense of nostalgia. This and vague images that evoke calm days and stormy nights on a beach.

The lyrics attempt to articulate these sense memories while the song’s cascading guitars and interesting percussion attempt to evoke the same. The mix of the ambient waves and the crash of electric guitars that means to evoke them give the song a sense of location that anchors itself on this metaphorical, sandy ground.

‘Mermaid Smiled’: Sonic Storytelling

‘Mermaid Smiled’ means to capture a feeling that triggered the vague image of a memory. It does this by using instruments to evoke the sounds you would expect at that location, making the experience as immersive and even moving as you allow yourself to submerge into those sonic depths.

The song’s lyrics articulate those moments of memory, complimenting the tinkling percussion and intense, flowing guitars in ways that fit the song’s sonic storytelling The sound of waves that open the song set the scene, giving us context by feeding us this image. Something about this choice, which feels much like a literary work, allows us to flow with the emotions on the track as they flow through.

The guitars on ‘Mermaid Smiled’ capture the sounds of the waves after this, first calm then booming, but always cascading over the tune. The percussion on the other hand builds up this sense of intensity, adding this sense of emotional charge that is complimented by our narrator’s lines.

‘Mermaid Smiled’ by Andrew Schneider then ends like it began, with the sound of waves bookending this narrative. The song is able to capture these memories. This while also pushing the listener to imagine where the swirl of emotions can take them.
