Lyndo Jaco’s “3” Finds the Fun in Keeping Rock Simple

Lyndo Jaco’s new record “3” takes pride in how inherently human it sounds. The South Australia-based musician’s new discography addition feels like the work of someone who would rather pick up a guitar and see where the song goes than spend hours trying to make it fit a formula. Across three tracks, Jaco keeps things humble, combining guitars, bass, drums and vocals into a small, intimate rock record.

The EP starts with “Feeling,” a track takes its own sweet time to settle down. Jaco’s vocals are conversational, almost as if he is talking to a friend while the band plays behind him. A medley of crackly guitars, energetic drumming and melodic singer give it a nice indie pop charm, while the rhythm section stays fairly on a 4/4 beat.

“It Was For” changes the mood slightly. It’s more dynamic, both in the rhythm and in Jaco’s vocal delivery. The title itself sounds like the beginning of an explanation, and the song uses that as a metaphor of looking back at something and wondering what it all meant. The song is a soothing mix of all the instruments that stay on beat throughout the track. It sounds more like an impromptu jam than a recorded song.

Last but not the least, “What’s Happening” gives the record its biggest burst of energy. The song is more zesty with Jaco’s vocals sounding more animated here, and the rhythm has a little more push behind it. The track feels open-minded and slightly restless and idiosyncratic, staying true to its name. It leaves the EP with the sense that Jaco still has more thoughts to get out.

The home-studio production is a big part of of the record’s personality. You can actually hear the individual instruments without the record feeling excessively polished or programmed. That kind of adds to its charm as the guitars have enough space to shine, the bass adds some much-needed groove, and the drums keep everything in place.

That DIY quality also makes the record feel relatable. There is a sense of familiarity in it which every bedroom musician would relate to. There are no unnecessary production chops here. Just three songs, a handful of instruments and an artist comfortable enough to let the imperfections stay.
