‘Lonely’: Building a Narrative Through Sound

The song begins bright, with a tinge of closeness while introducing its listeners to the thumping soundscape. The percussion’s rhythm is a consistent through-line through out the song keeping the beat steady. This while the varying synth melodies on ‘Lonely’ gives it a sense of movement.

The vocals act as the bridge between one part of the song’s sonic movement and another. From, the minimal “…Help me out…” to the moving and full, “…help me, I’m so lonely…I can’t be without you, I’ll die…”. The movement from saying little about the longing being felt, to saying more while layering onto the emotion of the first line give the song direction. This direction in turn elevates the song’s mood.

Layering It

The first sonic movement in ‘Lonely’ is bright but slightly emotionally charged. Its synths are bright and bouncy with an undertone or pull of something sadder. The vocal “…help me out…” repeats and leads us to the song’s second movement, “…Help me, I’m so lonely…”. Here, the synths become more staccato while the instrumental becomes more sparse and expansive. This also gives way to a bit more to the longing present beneath the throbbing percussion.

The final part is more open, and moves into a wholly emotionally charged space. The line, “…I can’t be without you, so I’ll die…”. Here the synths sound a bit more spaced out, holding an almost wet weight to them that highlights the song’s longing. The synths pull at you as the song finally cools down, allowing the emotion to simmer.

‘Lonely’ by ATMES resolves on the consistent, beating percussion that was present throughout the track. Its instrumentation and subject matter have the capacity to move the listener, both emotionally and on the dance-floor. The song’s trance-like quality allows it to penetrate and move its listener in an almost immersive way
