sautereau-What If | Love

Chloe Sautereau, known musically as sautereau, is a Geneva-born, New York City-based singer and songwriter who initially made her mark on Swiss local radio with the release of her 2019 EP, “As I Keep On Dreaming”; under her debut name, ‘Cee’. I describe her sound as ethereally soothing, emotive, and smoothly expressive– right from her skilled guitar playing, to the songwriting prowess she presents. sautereau credits artists such as Finneas O’Connell (best known for his work with his sister, global sensation Billie Eilish), and Jessie Reyez as her inspirations.

A similar sound and thematically aligned songwriting effort continues to stand out in sautereau’s single, “What If”; an ode to what is (arguably) the most beautiful human emotion– love. In her own words, ‘What If’ is set in the headspace of when one hits it off with another for the first time; and thinks about it in retrospect, resurrecting every single moment, and the smallest of memories; and this is combined with a beautifully minimal, soothing sound.

There is a distinct flavour to her guitar playing, playing the perfect support to her vocals; as she talks about falling in love with somebody new, and how it plays into the countless hidden treasures around them, as they dally in their own little world. She also slips in numerous references to New York City here- its beauty almost a metaphor to that of the feeling of falling in love itself. A beautiful synergy exists between the beat and her vocals as she transports the listener to places magical- and it all comes together as a very, very solid effort.

‘What If’ by sautereau makes a solid addition to my playlist, as I’m sure it will to yours; listen to it here!
