‘Let Them Eat Cake’ by LiVES is an energetic indie rock album that’s out on October 25th. Its songs chronicle responses to hypocrisy and the current state of the world by penning down observations and reflections that are angry, nihilistic and cynical.
The soundscape of the album is loud, viscerally melodic in ways that stomp and move through the body. Their lyrics are observations made in seething anger, expressing moments of range behind energetic electric guitars, percussion and on one occasion an organ.

‘Let Them Eat Cake’: The Singles
‘Cancelled’
‘Cancelled’, a song that’s also one of two singles off of ‘Let Them Eat Cake’. The song sets up the album’s overall tone. It does this with its electric guitars and stomping percussion, gritty and angry. The song’s attitude is visceral, while its lyrics immediately point out their disillusionment with the world.
“…I’ve been going down hill since the first day I went online,
I’m feeling is disillusioned with the blah blah of our time…”.
The song brings up the paradoxical nature of a life online. One where “…someone with the audacity to live their life…” are:
“…Blacklist
Post Truth
Doxxing
Cancelled…”.

‘Come Together #2’
The second single off of the album ‘Come Together #2’ is a definite highlight off of “Let Them Eat Cake” with its bright almost seductive guitar riffs under darkly reflective lyrics. It carries over the burst of energy from the last track while layering the disillusionment with a reflection on depression. The juxtaposition of the hevay with lyrics with the groovy instrumentation sustains that established burst of expression while injecting a reflective style and tone.

‘Let Them Eat Cake’: The Middle
‘Is This What You Want?’ is an observation of a social media feedback loop, that frustrayingly lacks originality. It plays with its percussion’s tempo throughout the song, with the verse at a steady pace while the refrain speeds up in a burst. This energy sustains and builds before transforming the vibe of the song by its second half.
“…It’s hard to see the originality…
…It’s plain to see the mediocrity…”.
‘Let Them Eat Cake’: The Climax and End
‘What A Way’ sounds shorter than the rest, sustaining a reflective mood that like ‘Cancelled’ and ‘Is This What You Want?’ describes an aspect of interactions online. Its expanding refrain adds another emotional layer to the swirling feelings of disillusionment and anger the soundscape’s narrative.
There’s a feeling that these song’s are building to the album’s emotional epicenter, acting like a cynical mirror reflecting nihilistic disillusionment.
The title track ‘Let Them Eat Cake’ is that emotional epicenter, which sounds bounce bright yet equal parts impassioned yet indifferent. Its lyrics are in the perspective of a self-serving, hypocritical politician whose values are shifty and paradoxical. The song’s tone is biting, witty and cynical. This placing the song at the album’s emotional and thematic core.
‘Already Dead’ has a soundscape that has a bounce that is stoppered almost, while its lyrics are a jumble of phrases from a tabloid buddled together to sustain the album’s energy. Its soundscape swells, while lines come together in a cheeky way.
‘Hope And Freedom’ is the album’s 7-minute closer, grounding the themes and emotions with a simple guitar strum melody in its first half. This before a long pause builds to an emotional yet climatic resolve with the band and an organ. It highlights the theme of cynical nihilism that runs throughout the album’s run-time.
“…Broken, defeated and spent in a world with no meaning…’.
