“I’m A Man”, by Gary Dranow: Infectious blues rock!

We’re no strangers to Gary Dranow and his refreshing blues-rock sound. Gary Dranow and the Manic Emotions, a blues rock band, transcend genre limitations, offering a sound deeply rooted in blues-infused Rock ‘n Roll. Gary Dranow’s journey into music served as a means to navigate the challenges posed by bipolar disorder and the aftermath of a stroke. The outcome is a diverse repertoire of songs that defy traditional genre boundaries, offering solace to those traversing their own arduous paths. After shining bright on “Shimmering”, keep reading for my thoughts on his latest single, “I’m A Man”!

The start of the song is the high-energy, filled with fanfare affair that we have come to look forward to from Gary, and this time too, there is a lot of energy right from the opening notes on “I’m A Man”, as the stage gets set for Gary to do what he does best, and bring all the elements together with his voice, and the energy here is infectious. Everything from the melodies, the harmonies, the drumming, as well as the extra ear candy elements sit just tight, and just right.

As we’ve come to expect from Gary Dranow, “I’m A Man” doesn’t shy away from tackling deeper emotions and life’s challenges. The track narrates the story of someone who has faced wrong choices but ultimately turns their life around for the better. The fast-paced blues, coupled with Gary’s energetic storytelling, keeps the track dynamic from start to finish, concluding on a positive and hopeful note– and I was left impressed at the execution!

The production, mix, and master, all come together in a very-well executed affair that makes “I’m A Man” punch well above its weight and goes beyond just a blues-rock song; I’d venture to say it is something that I would comfortably kick on and sing to on loop, habitually; and that’s quite saying something. When you do listen to the song and find yourself, apropos of nothing, air-guitaring or air-drumming, that is what the mastery at play here is. The mix is tight, and glued extremely well together, having space for all the instruments; and the master gives it a powerful, warmer sound that sits just about perfectly with the style of music; and this song, presents itself as an extremely well-made package.
