Satsuma is a musical project of Edinburgh-based multi-instrumentalist Cam Halkerston. He demonstrates his writing, producing, and recording skills through Satsuma, a musical endeavour that stands out for its sheer authenticity. Reviving the good old 90s alternative rock with grunge textures and repurposing them with a mellow lo-fi touch, Satsuma is bridging the gap between retro and modern, with one heart-touching number at a time. With deeply introspective lyrics, Satsuma’s essence lies in stirring his listeners on both emotional and intellectual levels.
Recently, Satsuma released a stunning rock album called ‘Anodyne’. A 6-track debut EP that feels like a musical, emotionally charged journal that speaks to you directly. Instead of sticking to the highly methodical traditional album style, ‘Anodyne’ feels more like an outpour, an emotional document that feels raw and deeply poignant.
The songs establish a mellow mood with their nocturnal feel, with sounds creating an atmosphere of sombre, dimly lit tranquillity that seeps into your cells as you progress into the EP. With soothing, almost fragile acoustics, the EP introduces you to its highly artistic fervour and the immersive, swelling crescendoes take you to some other realm altogether. To mirror the instability of emotions, the artist switches between stillness and movement, expressed breathtakingly through vivid soundscapes. The lyrics explore a variety of themes, with the most prominent being longing, emotional exhaustion, and identity. The title beautifully describes the temporary state of relief from all the pain and heaviness, but the truth remains that it is only momentary. The lyrics echo the artist’s deep emotional profundity that stirs you to the core, too.

The rustic nuances in the production and the next-room feel give the tracks a certain warmth and closeness, which makes them even more resonant. The dynamic song structures make the album feel less monotonous and more artistic and refreshing. With emotive, soul-gripping vocals, intensely stirring lyrics, and stunning alt-rock instrumentality, this album deserves a place in your playlist!
