Matt Deangelis-World I’m Coming For You | Rock Ballad Revival

You might love this new version of Elton John, but I miss the 80s one. The one that belted out hits like it’s nobody’s business. This is Matt Deangelis, so why am I talking about Elton John. A reincarnation of the best Elton lives in Matt, and he knows how a song goes. World I’m Coming For You is his latest album.

He opens the album with the title track, a spectacular display of piano, guitar and vocals. Many times, in that order. All else doesn’t seem to matter when he surfs on the ivories, playing one chord after the other, owning parts of the song. His lyrics might not have the theatric bamboozling powers of Bernie Taupin, but they’re his and they’re fun to listen to. Like Electric Light Orchestra, Matt is Jeff Lynne as he conducts a symphony around his music. Refreshing and a beautiful opening to this album.

So Fine is the love song that we all thought was about us. With simple chords and even simpler lyrics, this song is an instant connect to that infatuation we all have had. Hope in his voice and the composition, Matt Deangelis has the kind of solos in his songs from the 80s people memorized because of how close to the vocals or verse they were. Mesmerizing with the candor of a child.

With vocal strains that sound like Adele in moments, Matt sings Mile Down the Road. By this song we know his primary instrument is the rich timbre of the piano. The strings follow during the verses, adding a depth to the arrangement that would otherwise never be known. The guitar solos and flourishes add great flavor to the track, especially the electric guitars with distortion. This album might be Matt’s Madman Across the Water.

Leading in with a piano instrumental usually puts a lot of pressure on a song. However, when the progression is so smooth and beautiful, the pressure is evenly balanced. All of his tracks have led to the charisma of Angel, or so he has designed it to be. The minor scale parts in between are especially emotional, where the vocals strike as much of a chord. A slower ballad, Angel is a heartfelt tribute by Matt Deangelis for love, and he nails the board to the stairway.

The Clock Knows All was Matt’s single in 2019. It was a rock ballad that was worth its own film, that’s how much of an impact it generated. Maybe I is the closing track for Matt Deangelis’ album World I’m Coming For You. I feel remorse that I’ve heard all these songs once before, it takes that thrill away. They are however, such beautiful and heartfelt compositions that they’re part of my playlist forever. By adding wind instruments in this song, he shows us how he isn’t afraid to stretch the elastic of defined sound and genres.

I have been a huge Elton John fan all my life, and Matt took me to that place in time again. His ballads and tracks have the strength to be impactful, soulful anthems for people to bring about any change in their lives. If it’s a little bit of a rut, this young, poised artist can change your day and hopefully your week. Matt knows he did mine.
