Biosphere and xiv make a fantastic team. On all accounts, music and thematic-they know their mixes and what they bring to the table. After collaborating on several singles, they release a joint album, Calamity. This is a single off that album, BLASTOFF!. Intimidation is something they’re banking on-so they can reverse that anxiety. Let’s get into why this track is one of their best.
xiv and biosphere have both worked the ambient sound out to great detail. The sound effects in this entire album are really well composed, so we know they’ve been hard at work. BLASTOFF! is a culmination of all of these, a curated concoction of beats, great rhymes and subliminal instrumentals. All sections of the song blend into each other to create this monolithic masterpiece from the hardworking duo.
I especially enjoyed that flute riff during the chorus, which is a light flourish over a very simple yet effective beat. It’s a great progression they’ve based it off on also. Nothing about this song is worth complaining about, other than it definitely featuring in your Spotify year round up and you denying it. From an indie duo, this is world class producer and performance work. I might not be a huge pop fan, but the subtle blend of R&B, hip-hop and creative flow that exists between these two has me hooked.
