Illumen – Drift Apart | Expressive

Stockholm-based trio, Illumen, recently released a hard-hitting pop track titled, “Drift Apart” – an emotional and cinematic track that features heartfelt lyrics and powerful vocals. Inspired by bands such as Imagine Dragons, Coldplay, and The Wombats, Illumen aspires to shed light on the dark times the world continues to live in through their music.

The track begins with singer Martin’s emotive vocals over a mellow piano progression, where he sings about making empty promises. Throughout the track, heavy electronic beats and lush synthesizers dominate, along with a gripping bassline – very dynamic and strong from the very beginning. “Drift Apart” explores the desire to change oneself for the better, as suggested by its title. The lyrics are quite introspective, focusing primarily on that urge to improve after a fading relationship. – “I wanna change the direction, it´s not okay, It´s like I´m lost in inception, I lost my way, where we keep drifting apart..”

What’s interesting on this track is that there’s an element of desperation in the vocals that fit right in with the hard-hitting instrumentation. An admirable production and a masterful mix enhance the listening experience. The chorus is catchy and could easily get your head shaking! Illumen knows how to turn up the energy in their songs – with their infectious melodies and relatable lyrics.

“Drift Apart” is the third song they have added to their discography. With three amazing releases, after debuting their single “Reasons” in early 2021, they have gained a decent fan following and have stuck to their signature sound throughout the tracks. Illumen’s expressive and powerful voice makes them the band to watch out for in the future, and I’m already eager to hear more!
