Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Charis puts a spin on the classic retro synth-pop sound on her latest single – ‘Own It’. With vibrant synth arpeggios playing over four-on-the-floor dance beats, the track has an upbeat vibe that is reminiscent of pop songs from the 2000s. Charis sings empowering lyrics in her confident tone and delivers a dynamic performance on this feel-good track!
Following the release of her well-received 2021 single, ‘Touch’, Charis seems to have found the formula to writing addictive songs – deep synth bases and a lot of mystery. ‘Own It’ starts off with melancholic guitar melodies and delicate vocals. Charis begins motivating herself, and the listener, right from the start of the track – “Yeah I’ve got a weapon / It’s that girl inside / That girl in my reflection, I say / Talking about you girl”.
As it progresses, ‘Own It’ develops a very lively, uptempo rhythm that will instantly get your feet tapping. A solid dance groove supports the catchy choruses and drives the song to a hip-hop verse that features another side of Charis’s versatile singing. I really liked the transitions – very smooth and effective, keeps you reeled in till the very end. A masterful production!
