Amanda McBrayer – Fun | Melancholy

As a teenager in the 1990s, hunting for CDs to feed my music addiction was pretty much my sole concern in life. This was a time when new releases were still quite costly, so bargain bins and second-hand shops were usually where I went looking for treasure. Amanda McBrayers new single ‘Fun’ feels like one of the gems that I had discovered in these hunts, a true melancholic masterpiece.

Amanda McBrayer is a fairly new artist from Tennesse who first came to our attention in 2021 with the single ‘Past Tense’. She has already become a seasoned solo artist even though she has only a couple of singles under her belt and for us – here on this side of the water – it felt like the discovery of a new and rare talent. Listening to ‘Fun’, we feel the strong urge to let as many people as possible know about it!

In this deep song filled with a melancholic tone, Amanda talks about unrequited love and being on the wrong side of it. She talks about moments she could never forget even though she was just a distraction(“just fun”) to someone she really loved. It’s a concept not unfamiliar to any of us and is something everybody has experienced at some point in life. The song itself is a hook with beautiful lyrics that every listener can relate to, forming a connection with the artists emotion. I cannot stress how important this connection can be and is the definitive factor for a good pop song.

By turns melancholic and euphoric; heavy and weightless; defiant yet delicate; ‘Fun’ is a single everyone must listen to; and I mean Everyone with a capital E.
