“Siren”, by In December: Bold. Energetic. Metal as hell!

In December, a Germany-based metal band, boldly defines themselves as unbound and creatively modern. With their fast, heavy, and melodic sound, the band delivers intelligent compositions featuring driving guitar riffs, clear vocals, shouts, and catchy melodies. Now, from one metalhead to another, “Siren”, their latest single– how fares it? Keep reading for my thoughts!

From the opening notes, we’re treated to the angry rhythm guitars that take you by storm after the intro, which, interestingly, also forms the musical motif for the song to then build upon. The first half of the song sees a friend in the clear vocals that go along with the rest of the ensemble quite effectively, making for a section that one can easily sing to, while the instrumental steadily builds up the energy and the panache in almost a Panic! At The Disco style, which is great in its own right; while oh boy, the second part of the song is what makes your breath hitch in your throat; the moment those growls hit you, you’ll know you’re firmly in metal-land; and the sections after keep elevating the track with their breakdowns and speedy sections that launch this into Sonata Arctica and Dragonforce territory with the speed, and the sheer fury coming off the speakers.

“Vamos” by Proklaim: This man just gets better and better at rap every day!

The final section of the song takes all the instruments and kicks them up a few notes, and this, along with the long, absolutely sublime long scream marks the end of the energy, in almost a “Tears Don’t Fall” by Bullet For My Valentine style; and sets us up for the brief– but succinct– outro. The mix and the master contribute heaps in keeping the instruments clear and separated yet glued– and it is, overall, an excellently done mix.

To say that “Siren” embodies the best of power metal would be to understate it; it, in fact, embodies the best of power and metal; with its fast ticks and tasteful breakdowns, we’re looking at an overall extremely well-packaged track that gets all the fundamentals of a good metal record right.
