Tristen Bishop – Overton’s Window | Ethereal Challenging Journey

Canadian contemporary classical composer Tristen Bishop and Ontario string quartet Penderecki String Quartet collaborate on an eclectic and bedazzling song titled Overton’s Window. While having his background and education in music, Tristen Bishop also has roots in history and theology.

The song commences with some incredibly beautifully performed string section which sound ethereal. Riffs, musical phrases, and passages created in this track synthesize a baroque, neoclassical, modern, romanticist type of vibe. As the song proceeds, we hear some very emotionally intricate and dense musical sections trying to combine chaos with harmony. This is a master work in contemporary classical music. Tristen Bishop along with the Penderecki String Quartet have created magic with Overton’s Window. The tones of the instruments in themselves would please anyone. That combined with the daring musical innovation with experimental ideas pushes and challenges the listener, asking them to be cerebral and actively engaged.

The song is quite unpredictable but remains rooted in some warm musical motifs while exploring a stunning soundscape of musical possibilities. No doubt with storytelling as a conscious part of his compositional strategy, Tristen Bishop creates music with complex narratives and a story makers’ understanding. The Overton window is a concept in political science, which tells that at a certain moment there is a fixed set of ideas acceptable to the public. In that context, one can say the song fiddles between avant garde and conventional in this song, in this Overton’s window of music. Overton’s Window is a perplexing and challenging piece of music that true music lovers would revel in decoding and enjoy in consuming.
