Hip-hop artist Johnny stirs up his discography with the release of his second track in 2021 — SHIFT. With a runtime of three and a half minutes, SHIFT showcases heartfelt inspiration from some of the foundational lessons in hip-hop, soul and the melancholic ambience of contemporary rhythm and blues. The lyricism in the track is as introspective as it is impassioned, reflecting Johnny’s stream of consciousness while being married to the mellow percussive beat that backbones across the track. The song opens up with Johnny humming on the autotune very much like the benchmarks left behind by artists like Kid Cudi and Jaden Smith, which does well to create an ambient soul soundscape. SHIFT is a track about looking in retrospect about one’s life and wondering if the cards we play are right and if our actions would leave enough footprints on the sands of time. Lyricism such as ‘Trying to make a shift / Let me tell you how it is / I’m not liking how I’ve been / Trying to make a shift’ represents the uncertain turpitude of emotional breaks at crisis periods in our life, and the spirals of reconsideration and depersonalization that comes along with it.
