Jean’s 2020 track Better Off had some rich Childish Gambino essence. He however added his own spark to it, creating an alchemy potion that only he could handle. His track was an infectious number. Merging R&B with old school hip-hop aura, he creates what the real fans of hip-hop desire. From Mos Def to Talib Kweli, you hear elements of all styles in his music. RiP2TRAP has those parts of jazz and smooth R&B that got discarded along the way. Luckily Jean is a renaissance man.
RiP2TRAP makes no voids of wasted sound. Either the beat flows, or Jean does. Jean takes control and spars with the beat often, bobbing and weaving. His verse is carefully curated, has the space and gaps but he’s kept them there. He adds his shout outs, his screams and his respects to the artists who have brought him here. Jean~ Baptiste is a firecracker that you find on the top shelf. You forgot its there, but it was reserved for a special occasion. I loved the Prince style opening
