When it comes to rising artists and all their lists, Dax is the one name that needs no introduction. The meteoric rise of the rapper has been marked by releases like “PTSD”, which we’ve covered on here before; and the latest single from the kitchen, “Dear Alcohol”, is a festival of features, with a great repertoire of rhymes and rhyme artists. Keep reading for my thoughts!
Featuring, in that order, Atlus, Kelsie Watts, Carly Pearl, Erv Ello, Skydxdy, Trippz, Kayla Rae, Common Tribe, Troy, Phix, KC Makes Music & Official DJ Aaron, it’s not an easy task to bring together so many talents at the same time, on the mic; but they’ve pulled it off! With a diverse mix of female and male vocalists, “Dear Alcohol” is a blend of great singing, with Dax’s signature rapping style. The flair and the drama on the voices is exemplary— and carries a punch emotionally. The ad-libs are also of note, with tasteful choice.

The ten-minute epic that “Dear Alcohol” is, all the artists have their own space, their own limelight, and the stitching between individual parts is great; until Dax returns after every feature verse to bring it all together with the hook, which is catchy, and hard to not sing along to.
The production keeps up excellently and matches all the voices here, too, with the gentle piano chords and the plucked electrics in the background forming the perfect bedrock for the vocalists to do what they end up doing excellently well on this song.
I suppose I would be remiss in not highlighting the challenges associated with taming such a diverse range of voices in a mix, and am glad to report that’s been handled with finesse and elegance. There is excellent control in the beat, and there is great use of the stereo field throughout the track, and all in all, “Dear Alcohol” is a banger listen. Easy two-thumbs-up recommendation!
