The UK-based multi-instrumentalist, producer, and singer-songwriter, Joshua Woo wows us with mellow lysergics with his new album, Beyond The Glass. The six track will take you a smooth journey to some of the most exquisite pockets of euphony. So, brace yourself for a chill, lo-fi funk time.
Right off the bat, we have the title track. The guitar strings are lonesome lines of light. With soothing melodies and mellow vocals, the track is a slumberous vortex. Reminiscent of Tame Impala, the track is a transfixing landscape, with valleys of psychedelia and free falling melancholy.
The harmonies form beautiful crossroads of euphonies with the roaming melodies, and mesmerizing synths. The syncopated beats and chill guitar melodies bring an illuminating funk allure to the song. Its parabolic rhythm is an endless sea of bliss.
Sailing through the paradise of Beyond the Glass, we arrive to the sunshine of Sunflower Seeds – the second track. It thrives with purpose. Punching beats and tight riffs define its contours as the smoky vocals bring us pieces of heaven. The artist uses the baselines to amplify the emotion in the vocals to exhilarating levels! We see stages of powerful guitar solos that connect popping flavors of funk-rock like string lights.
Future Tripping is the third track. The artist explores soul-funk. Reminiscent of The Beatles, the track stretches with choir harmonies, expounding on nostalgia in magical ways. Slivers of folk blend into the caramel funk fabric. We see a lavish use of passionate R&B accents to adorn the canvas with old-school romance.
Without The Fear is the next track. A complete 180 from the previous songs in terms of the composition’s aesthetic. We see a larger use of acoustics, and country melodies. And the mellow rise of the rich vocals to breezy highs make for a satisfying release of the emotional build up. This also brings up the artist’s use of broad sweeps of sentiment across the track to create a loaded frame of emotion.
10-2-1 opens with ethereal furls of melodies that rains its emotion throughout. In this track we witness more electronic moments. The tight basslines and shiny blades of synths create a trippy visual. The sound inclines to a futuristic narration of a retrospective nostalgia.
Climbing lines of synths erect a vibrant ladder to new worlds of emotion. Ending with Goodbye, the artist revisits the acoustic aesthetic. Glinting guitar melodies and delightful synth hooks craft an engaging soundscape which steams into the melancholic baritones of the vocal.
