Nicki Wells – Carry On | Hymn Of Serenity

If you watched Coke Studio India’s Nitin Sawhney episode almost a decade ago, one would not have missed the force of nature that is Nicki Wells. Singing Nadia in impeccable Hindi and Sanskrit, her presence was unforgettable. A very young bass prodigy Mohini Dey (on the fretless bass) and fusion drummer Jivraj Singh (later of Parekh & Singh fame) were also part of the virtuoso ensemble.

From that time on, from being part of Nitin Sawhney’s band, Nicki has had a stunning repertoire of music as a solo artist including the ethereal record Shloka released in 2019. Her music has the signature of her childhood experiences being raised in Dharamshala at the Himalayas in India.

Now Nicki Wells comes up with her latest dazzlingly serene ballad titled Carry On. Carry On is the second single release from her upcoming album. The song had its genesis during the lockdown and features the first piano that she ever played from her family home.

Carry On is serene and heavenly in the truest sense of the term with sustained synth chords being light as air. To these piano chords are added, as the ethereal vocals by Nicki Wells seep in. May it be the arrangement or the fantastic vocal performance, the song would leave you bedazzled. The percussion is light and subtle, highlighting the barebones song structure. We can hear some Indian classical vocal influence with the slurs and almost alaap-like harmonies in the song.

A dazzling music video that aptly conveys the theme of the song was filmed at Osea Island in the estuary of the River Blackwater, Essex, East England. With some otherwordly vocal harmonies and corresponding synths in the track, the song reaches a climactic peak.

With Carry On, Nicki Wells has intricately sculpted a song that is nothing short of genuinely spiritual.
