Honey VHS is the return to natural, unfiltered music that we missed. There’s currently an entire generation or so swirling up a movement in which art that is too polished is being rejected. This band from Brooklyn has inspirations from blues, rock, folk, and jazz influences, which meld perfectly with their own peculiar fingerprint in sound. This is their debut album, imbibing everything they believe in and more. You’re about to listen to With Pulp.
Singing over felted instrumentals
Singer songwriter Cameron Roberts and guitarist Luca Moneti Schliemann set the precedent of the collection with the refreshing single, If You Want Me. Love finds a velvety instrumental background against which Roberts’ vocals glide. Jasper Grigsby-Schulte guides the lower registers with an accompaniment that might be too characteristic at times. The tones that Joe Bailey and Luca set up with their guitar work become the textural overlap for this wonderful music. Honey VHS are upto something that will be a strong tide in the indie world.

I enjoy how the arrangements are unpredictable, yet familiar enough to be a territory to revisit. Producer Lucas Saur has projected the vision with certainty and precision, letting the music breathe organically and letting the moment decide what will come next in the recording. The range is ridiculous, to be honest; for Blue Eyes, Sunshine doesn’t borrow the emotion from the previous stylistic journey. Chord progressions are also unpredictable, trying out a funk style in some parts, while some instruments are given the liberty to take a detour. Honey VHS find their rhythm in being in the present, totally as themselves.
Trying a blend of what inspires
Jet Lag has some great storytelling with alt rock swells during the chorus. I loved this song personally, for the energy doesn’t just spike but guides you to the moment. This, with Never Left The Ground goes as well as coffees and bagels (sorry, didn’t know a better NY pairing reference). Honey VHS are able to capture that live sound extremely well—as they do it the way live bands are supposed to put together music. In one take, live, enjoying and feeling every part of the lyrical narrative they wrote.
With Pulp is the kind of album that becomes a beautiful niche in your home to call a cosy nook. Though your adrenaline is given a treat through graded plateaus, you also get acoustic gems like Cotten Rag. If the song can speak without lyrics, a strong decision has been made to leave it as the kind of interlude that completes a jigsaw puzzle for what it is. When this continues into the 11th month of the year, you know a penultimate trail is left to be walked.
Honey VHS finally place their footprint
November, Childhood and Secrets Are For Losers make the trifecta that are the crowns of this jewel. Often, you see bands loop in the B-sides (in terms of effort put in) towards the closing of their albums. Here, Honey VHS makes their intent ironclad, to have a signature in their music that no one can replicate. Even their inspirations would be proud of the blend of music they’ve achieved.
