Vroni Magenta – Obsidian Storm | Gothic Silicon Opus

German electronic act Vroni Magenta has released an ominously beautiful work of art with their latest EP Obsidian Storm. The EP consists of 3 tracks featuring the brilliant Swiss vocalist Kelly Brouze and 2 instrumentals. The record is an epic-sounding masterpiece that takes us on a musical journey of atmospheric dread and melancholy. At a running length of about 20 minutes, Obsidian Storm takes us on an immersive odyssey of electronica-induced intoxication.

The opening track Realign starts with an ominous melodic synth line which keeps you guessing for what might be coming next. Brouze’s vocals creep in to set the mood for the record. She sings about the need to realign to what feels correct. Fly Away is a minimalist track that builds quiet awe underneath a sense of dread. It begins with an eerie ambient atmosphere building up to a heartbeat-like rhythm. Brouze’s vocals when she sings the chorus is really heartfelt as she sings of moving to better things. The song’s outro moves into a double-time bass beat and granular reverb fading away.

The title track begins with 80s Europop reminiscent keyboard lines with some vocals in the background. It is a more euphoric mid-point of the record. It sounds uplifting with the simultaneous use of gloomy background vibe. The latter half of the track moves into some awesome synth riff madness. Missing Star is really standout dark synthpop ballad featuring some phenomenal vocals by Brouze. The mid-song instrumental bridge has some really good electronica production. Interestingly, this is the only track having a raven in the track artwork while the other songs have iterations of planets aligning. The final track Byzantium is a somber aural conclusion to the record with its fading synth lines and doppler production.

Obsidian Storm is a masterclass in dark ambient electronica. Vroni Magenta mixes industrial tones with synthwave. The songwriting and Bourne’s magnificent vocals give us some great darkpop tracks. Elements of trip-hop are present with the downtempo and melancholic nature of the songs. The tracks segue masterfully into each other with smoothness building anticipative transitions. The lyrical themes are deep and retrospective. The arrangements create a gloomy cinematic aura with stunning orchestral production. Vroni Magenta generates emotions with gothic electronic musical storytelling in this darkwave gem.
