Lucy Dreams – Dreamland

Dreamland by Lucy Dreams is a dreamy electronic pop track. It’s soft and gentle, like a dreamhaze going past, which may be why the band chose that moniker.

Lucy Dreams is a one-of-a-kind band from Austria’s cultural capital of Vienna. While we all know and love electronic music, the band members David Reiterer and Philipp Prückl worked together on an independent system of digital and analogue effects for music production. Lucy is the name of this system. Lucy is an important component of the band’s creative process as the band members state. Clearly, the band is named after this AI companion is significant enough to be honoured by having the band named after her.

Dreamland is a symbolic song in and of itself. The singer is having a dream in which he sees two eyes that are burning like fires in the darkness. He soars and floats over the air, hoping for someone to come along and join him. Further, he is overtaken by a wonderful sensation, like if love is in the air or a star’s soul is caressing him. He believes he is in his dreamland, which is a joyful state of bewilderment.

With two choruses, a bridge, and a final verse, the song has the quintessential structure of a pop song. Maybe that’s why the music is so simple to vibe to. At the same time the sounds are not harsh or abrasive, making it a smooth experience that qualifies into the genre of Dream-Pop.

We also had a chance to speak to Lucy Dreams!

Congratulations on your new track! How would you describe Dreamland to someone getting into Lucy Dreams with no past exposure to your discography?
We believe in a beautiful space beyond reality. A fictional place you create in your head, where you find shelter and in which you start to make your dreams real. With the track “Dreamland”, we want to share our very own and personal space with everybody out there. The track is a journey to a colorful and unknown galaxy, both for us and hopefully also for the listeners. We borrowed the visuals from a great artist called VISUALDON. The clips used in the music video represent exactly what we feel and what we believe in.

We noticed hints of blues rock, psychedelia and lounge-rock in the track. Who would you say are your biggest musical influences?
Well spotted, we do like Pink Floyd a lot. Together with music by Kraftwerk and Mozart, their songs were the first ones we used when experimenting with Lucy. Other than that, Daft Punk have definitely left their marks on our ears and hearts.

Understandably, the ‘trio’ has an interesting story behind its composition. Tell us about your two plus one line-up!
Lucy is an independent system of digital and analogue effects, which we developed specifically for music production. Now, Lucy can be understood as an A.I. – but, the connection between her and us has become a far more intimate one, because Lucy is deeply involved in the songwriting process. So, we see Lucy as an A.B., an artificial band member.

2020 and 2021 observed a series of singles released. Is Lucy Dreams hinting at a possible full-length EP or an album anytime soon?
Yes, we are passionately working on a full-length LP at the moment. It will be called “Götterfunken” and shall be released later this year. If you want to be among the first to join us on this journey, please drop by at www.lucydreams.net.

Lastly, tell us about the evolution of your music’s sound. Starting almost a couple of years back, how would you say you’ve been able to carve out your own unique sound that separates you from others operation in the scene.
Well, the groundbreaking moment was definitely the first interaction with Lucy. Her ideas have been the basis for fundamental parts of all releases ever since, and very likely will be in the future. The way Lucy processes what we feed her with is just incredible, and probably gives our sound a certain uniqueness.

Going forward, is there a particular direction you see this sound going?

Most importantly, it has to move forward. Where to exactly is less important. What we try to achieve is constant progress, both in terms of creativity and technology. And, we hope to inspire people with the progress we make.
