‘For Forever’ by Hollie Kenniff is an Ethereal Ambient Instrumental Album that Flows Through Different Points in Time & Emotion

For Forever’ by Hollie Kenniff is an ethereal 11-track album that takes its listener on journey that ebbs and flows through different moments. Some linger, while others weigh heavy, some feel like you’re floating while others attempt to pull you down to ground you.

The soundscape is rich with piano and guitar-led tracks that are accented by synth and bass. There’s something about the movements through the songs that feels calm and almost healing.

‘For Forever’: Track-by-Track

‘For Forever’ (1): ‘Linger in Moments’-’Amare’

The first track on the album ‘Linger in Moments’ uses its soundscape to set an ethereal tone, sifting through calm resplendence to bright, choral ‘aahs’. These synths and piano melodies build and build, reaching a climax that feels like sonic rush of bright, picturesque memories.

‘Surface’ on the other hand feels grounded, with instrumentation that evokes the sounds of wind and rain. Its sounds are cascading and fleeting all at once, putter and trot. This while every melody seems to soar and expand through the track.

The titular track ‘For Forever’ like ‘Surface’ is evocative of winds and torrents. The soundscape feels like its weighed down by emotion, the weight getting heavier as time passes by. There’s something about this song’s soundscape that feels titular and emotionally potent.

‘Sea Sketch’ is infused with guitar-led soothing and calm, pulling and pulling until we reach this almost trance-like, meditative state. Its calmness washes over the scene, with the voices that seem ever-present sounding as calm but also on the edge of unsettling. This while the song’s piano seems to wink in and out.

‘The Way of the Wind’ is dark, feeling like a fade to black that builds and builds. This song introduces the bass to highlight this strong, moody emotion. The sharpest notes in the melody seem to hold this sense of sadness taunt, before a synth-based rhythm breaks through to create this sense of catharsis.

‘Amare’, much in the vein of the last track, subtly builds on this sense of catharsis. The song builds and builds, holding onto the weight of ‘For Forever’ and the lightness of ‘Linger in Moments’. This making it the perfect interlude before we journey on.

‘For Forever’ (2): Over Ocean Waves’-’Far Inland’

‘Over Ocean Waves’ creates an emotionally moving moment, with sharp notes again holding emotion taunt. The soundscape feels like it engulfs you, like a warm blanket that completes the roof of a blanket fort. Its instruments feel like they hold a bit of weight now.

‘What Carries Us’ sounds like a piano-led eulogy in the most haunting way. Some moments on the track feel like they could soundtrack wholesome vignettes, not ignoring the weight that’s been established but tethering it to tender, light and floaty emotion. Hope.

‘Esperence’ holds in it expansive, guitar-led moments of hope and longing. Its emotion feels carried, highlighting this strength in melancholy. Its mood is relaxing and transient, almost like ripples in deep water.

‘Rest In Flight’ floats through heavy emotion, allowing it to float down and hold the fort. Its heavy pianos feel held up/supported. Light, empowered and enlightened. Like ‘What Carries Us’, the sound feels heavy like a eulogy, but with this light sense of acceptance tinged to it.

The last song on the album, ‘Far Inland’ begins with a trotting percussion that evokes the sounds of travelling on a gravelly ground. It summarises that expansive yet moody sound that keeps flowing through the album, allowing each lilting melody and moving part to conclude this story. It finally grounds the emotions that have been floating around with an air of calm, ethereal, glory.

All in all, ‘For Forever’ by Hollie Kenniff is an album that flows through emotions and moods the same way rivers flow into seas. Gently yet all at once.
