Flywheel is a psychedelic pop group from Cork, Ireland. They pull inspiration from a wide range of sounds, think ’90s shoegaze and bands like Cocteau Twins, alongside artists such as Quickspace Supersport and Burial, and also newer influences from acts like Gilla Band, Tonstartssbandht, and Yard Act. Their first album, She, came out while they were based in Stockholm and working with IWH Records. Vocal duties sit with Ann Marie Ryan, whose delivery feels detached and otherworldly, floating over Mark Tangney and Kieran Curtin’s layered guitar work, supported by Paul Kelleher’s driving bass and Mick O’Donovan’s drums. In the last three years, they’ve been releasing regularly, updating and expanding the sound they started with.
Flywheel has released a new single, “I Want to Join The Fall,” and the way it builds atmosphere is the whole point. It starts with mysterious synth work, the kind that sounds like it’s hovering just out of reach. Then, as the track moves forward, the psychedelic-sounding vocals gradually come into focus, and the song instantly feels more alive, like the room has shifted.

Before the vocals fully take over, there’s already a trippy, repetitive soundscape doing its job. It creates this hypnotic aura that makes you lean in, even if you don’t know why yet. After that foundation clicks into place, the riffs kick up, and the energy jumps, elevating the mood into something more immersive, almost trance-like.

Musically, the track begins with classic-rock sounding guitars, which gives it a familiar backbone. But it doesn’t stay rooted there. Soon the guitars and synth textures drift into something more ethereal, and the hypnotic repetitive riff sits underneath the shoegaze vocal at just the right intensity. It’s not overwhelming. It’s perfectly balanced, like everything is cooperating to keep you in the dream.
