The Pulltops are a duo originating from Milwaukee, known for their catchy blend of Indie Rock, Power Pop, and Album Rock. Drummer Mark Pierret and guitarist Tom Crowell, who both had diverse tastes in music and were avid collectors of records, found an instant connection when they became part of the same band. On their latest single, “With You”, they find a lot of common ground and bring their elements together quite nicely. Keep reading for my thoughts!
This song shouts power and positivity from the very start. From the dreamy plucked synths in the background in the intro to the song, to the wafty reverbs that permeate the whole song, the ethereality of this song never seems to elude the listener, regardless of the power barreling down the centre channel straight into your mind. The song is full of pieces of ear candy, and the steady, powerful, heartbeat-like nature of the percussions has a part to play in this, I’m led to believe; with the vocal harmonies aplenty, completing the package, resulting in pure power.

The songwriting structure on “With You” is also dynamic and varied, with fluid transitions between the high and low-energy parts of the song, effortlessly dallying between the quiet and confessionary, to the bold and proud. The vocal performance is commendable, too, with catchy, uplifting melodies, tight harmonies, and great chemistry in the elements (if you will excuse the pun) of the song.

The mixing and mastering of this song also serve to gracefully elevate the production, with great use of space in the mix, with top-notch consistency and quality through the track. There are some really creative mixing decisions at play here, especially in the drumming department, and it is these tiny touches throughout the track that add a lot more value than the unassuming ear would, at first, pick up on.
Overall, “With You” by The Pulltops is a great song– writing-wise, story-wise, and technically, too. I thoroughly enjoyed my time listening to it, and I’m sure, so will you; check out the song here!
