Coma Beach is a revelation where shock, chaos, pain, rage, and isolation converge in their debut album, “The Scapegoat’s Agony.” Drawing from influences like Sex Pistols, Joy Division, and Guns N’ Roses, their music transcends generic punk rock, offering an artistic vision that straddles the line between rebellion and alternative rock’s nuanced textures. Keep reading for my thoughts on their latest single, “Extreme Masochist”!
The band’s English lyrics explore existentialist themes from Samuel Beckett, satirical absurdities a la Douglas Adams, tragic conflicts reminiscent of Shakespeare’s plays, and the metaphysical pessimism of Arthur Schopenhauer. That’s apparent here, in “Extreme Masochist”– right from the opening notes, there’s power, there’s loudness, and there’s energy; and as the vocals kick in, all of the sentiments in the lyrics get exemplified with the vocals’ growled, aggressive stance, a theme that persists for the whole of the track.

The instrumentation doesn’t leave any stones unturned here, either- reminiscent of darker, more metal-oriented bands like “Type O Negative”, blended skillfully with a higher-energy vibe that takes one to the land of punk rock, stepping into post-rock, too. The solo in the middle is just the icing on the cake, as its fast, technical nature leaves one impressed. The rest of the production enables the vocals and the guitars to shine through quite beautifully, with the percussion keeping tight, cohesive timing, holding the rest of the mix together rather nicely.
This is all brought together quite solidly with the mix and master, which retains a nice balance between aggression and the ease of listening with just the right amounts of fuzzy warmth and clinical precision, a balance that’s hard to get right; and I’m glad to report that is the case here. Overall, “Extreme Masochist”– this is a track that gets your juices flowing, and gets them flowing nicely indeed. Check out the track here!
