Andy Smythe, a singer-songwriter hailing from London, is igniting a Brit-pop revival with his meticulously crafted retro sound. Drawing inspiration from the Beatles and the vibrant energy of 90s icons like Blur and The Verve, Andy weaves intricate tales of his inner world reminiscent of Lennon and Bowie. Armed with a four-octave voice akin to Jeff Buckley’s and multi-instrumental prowess à la McCartney, Andy enchants audiences nationwide, delivering heartfelt performances that remind one of the essence of the song above all else. In typical British fashion, if I may say, this song finds itself animate yet laid back and layered deep, especially with the pianos and the harmonicas; while a pacey drumkit keeps things swimming along rather nicely. There is also much to appreciate about the vocals here, as Andy really comes into his own with the higher registers in the later verses, further supplemented by the choir-like vocal harmonies and the dramatic piano-playing in the background. The piano playing, is lively and strikes the right balance in terms of its articulation and its expressiveness, maintaining an upbeat staccato sound throughout, yielding charm to the mix.

Andy’s vocals are well-complemented by the instrumentation, and the lyrical themes are hopeful, and optimistic; while being cautiously aware– and the execution here is par excellence with the rest of the ensemble coming together rather nicely as well, with sprinkles of electronic elements like synth pads in the background giving this mix more drive. The mix and master is clear and precise, with a clinical sound that captures detail excellently well, offering something new for the listener every time they put on “Don’t Be A Fool” and put their ears a little closer.
All in all, “Don’t Be A Fool” by Andy Smythe: This is the kind of song that makes for a great listen, and keeps us looking forward to what is to come next from him. A pleasure to listen to! Check out the track here:
