‘Definition’ by The Numb Project is a Muted Electronica Album that Flows and Fades

Definition’ by The Numb Project is an 11-track electronica album with addictive synths, shuffling percussion, and playful rhythms. The songs create various soundscapes that vaguely capture a specific moment at a specific time in a specific location.

Each track captures a mood. These tones are sometimes unpredictable, and other times fade past. The rhythms stack over each other in a staccato groove, creating a unique and immersive vibe.

‘Definition’: Track-by-Track

Calm Build

The album opens with ‘New Direction’, a muted and relaxed opener that sets the tone for the rest of the album. Its sound feels forward-moving, flowing past as though it is the catalyst for the rest of the narrative, especially with its heavy-trippy percussion.

‘Turn’ builds over the previous song’s rhythm, with a deeper groove that feels a bit more mellow. The melodies feel like they turn, creating a vibe that feels like it’s beginning to push at you, ending with what sounds like a knock on the door.

‘Morning Kidz’ feels trance-like, with synths that evoke imagery that feels like watching the sun slowly through an open window in the morning. The sonic narrative seems to have more pronounced movement, which begins to make its rhythm and melody seem more unpredictable from this point on.

‘Jay Strides’ feels more relaxed with its more blues-like sound, almost as though the movement that’s been building throughout has taken a pause. Its sound feels stationary almost, as though the listener is moving through static in slow motion.

Devolution

‘Sphere 24’ on the other hand builds a dark edge over this static, with flute-like sounds flittering over the album’s characteristic shuffling percussion. There’s an unnerving slide towards a mood that feels calm & subdued yet uneasy.

This sense of unease devolves into disorientation on ‘Piper’, a song that feels like a dream-like haze. This track has vocals that seem to fade in and out in a haze, offering a different perspective to the sound established so far.

‘Broken Time’ is melodies and rhythms that sound disrupted in a staccato haze. The sound seems to come out of a skipping vinyl. Horns and vocals blend into a whirling haze, picking up on a story’s setting but nothing else.

The nature of the percussion on ‘Marty and the Penguins’ sounds different, creating a new groove after the upheaval of the last few tracks. Thus groove is mellow, highlighted by the sounds of a DJ’s turntable scratching at certain intervals.

Calm Denouement

‘Simple Waves’ is calmer, with its synths and sounds emulating the rushing sounds of waves. This is layered with the percussion that seems to trip over itself, almost cluttered, fading past towards a resolution of some sort.

‘Fatback’ is uneasy at first before it settles into a rhythm that trots. Its grating sounds seem distorted in visceral ways, familiar yet a bit quiet. ‘Lasso’ rounds out the album, with a sound that seems to pull at the listener. Its sound is airy, with a sense of foreboding, whirring synths and trippy percussion almost grating.

The synth melodies on the track build, louder and louder before being overtaken by sounds reminiscent of wind chimes to close the album out.

‘Definition’ by The Numb Project is trotting, trippy percussion and whirring synths that give a vague suggestion of a story buried deep in its soundscape. The album makes for a groovy listen that flows and fades over you as it progresses.
