‘Could Have Been EP’ by The New Citizen Kane is a Electronic/Pop EP that Captures Nostalgic What Could Have Beens

Could Have Been EP’ by The New Citizen Kane is a 6-track  Electronic/Pop EP that tells the story of a love gone stale with a nostalgic, dream-like haze. The soundscape’s synths and bass-drops evoke this nostalgia, while each song’s lyrics explore emotions of a love that’s very hot and cold.

These tracks move through these emotions as though gliding past thoughts that spring up while out narrator thinks about their lover. Or rather the one they love. All of this culminates into a body of work that captures fleeting hopes and bittersweet conclusions.

‘Could Have Been EP’: Track-by-Track

‘Could Have Been EP’ pt. I: ‘Could Have Been’-’Talk’

The opener and titular track of the EP ‘Could Have Been’ is a mellow track that remininsces and even holds out hope for what could have been. The song is bright with nostalgia, hoping that there is a chance to make things work after what seems like an encounter with that love. Its lines hold in them the crux of this EP’s theme.   “… Do you ever think of me and wonder what could have been?…”.

‘Forget The World’ expands on this encounter, introducing this fast-paced moodiness that begins to mingle with the nostalgia from the last track. There’s a sense of escapism on the track that almost borders on desperation, elevated by this floating feeling that highlights just how brief this encounter is. This song also introduces bridges that change the nature of the song’s soundscape to highlight a point or shift perspective.

‘Talk’ is an attempt to reach out, with our narrator almost begging for another chance. There’s this sense that this relationship is rooted in misunderstandings, with moments where the two simply don’t seem to get eachother. “…I feel like you’re speaking to me in a language I don’t speak and you’re talking it to me…”.

The first half feels like to establishes wistfulness, longing and all the reasons why this love is ultimately unsuccessful.

‘Could Have Been EP’ pt. II: ‘Tonight, Maybe’-’Forget The World- Red Man Run’s Schitzophonic Club Mix’

‘Tonight, Maybe’ presents a fleeting hope and glimpse of optimism. A moment to ground, where out narrator asks for an answer. The lines feel heavy with frustration with a mood that begins to move towards resignation.

“…You hold the key in your hand,

Don’t give up without a fight…”

This to reluctant acceptance.

“…One minute its here and (the) next it’s gone,

The mystery us what keeps us going on…”.

‘Chasing The Past’ is slow, stewing in this resignation. There’s hurt and pain that replaces frustration. This sense of “there doesn’t seem to be much I can do now”. “I can feel you slipping away, but its faster than I’d like to admit…’. The second half of the song is choppy, almost asthe singer is singing the words through the blades of a standing fan.

Choppy like those memories are flitting past, or even being shredded and destroyed. This mood feels like it concludes the mood and emotions that run through the EP.

The last song on the album ’Forget The World- Red Man Run’s Schitzophonic Club Mix’ feels like a credit roll. This song’s soundscape feels like it’s in three parts, encompassing every emotion and moment throughout the EP. Its a sonic journey that takes us through every beat of the EP’s narrative, allowing the listener live through its motions through summary.

‘Could Have Been EP’ by The New Citizen Kane captures reflections through nostalgia, doing this in a way that evokes every emotion our narrator would have felt in those moments. It makes for a compelling listen with its moving story.
