‘Carols of the Harp’ by Cecily Beer is a Harp-led Instrumetal EP that Rings in the Spirit of a White Christmas

Carols of the Harp’ by Cecily Beer and Thomas Hewitt Jones is a three-song instrumental EP that rings in the Christmas spirit with cascading melodies. This courtesy of the harp and a haunting string quartet. These melodies reimagine timeless Christmas classics. This with the upbeat ‘Sussex Carol’ & ‘Bell Carol’ and the quiet ‘Silent Night’ to round out the collection’s sound.

The songs all open on a quiet, subdued note usually with the harp. Then the other stringed-instruments cascade in to build the song’s mood and recognisable melody. This is especially evident in ‘Silent Night’, where the melodies of the string quartet play the main melody while the harp’s melodies flit around it. All this before the two melodies unite to help the main melody hit even harder.

‘Carols of the Harp’: Track-by-Track

‘Carols of the Harp’ opens with ‘Sussex Carol’, a track that introduces a sense of tentative hope to the listener that feels almost fairytale-esque. Its melody builds and builds with a light tone that feels tentative and bright. This followed by ‘Silent Night’ and its deliberate slowness, that injects a sense of momentum and calmness to the rendition.

‘Bell Carol’ closes out the EP, opening with its quiet, plucky harp before the quartet cascades in. These cascading melodies highlight the sense of gravitas this carol holds while accentuating and elevating its sense of mystery.

‘Carols of the Harp’ by Cecily Beer rings in the spirit of a magical, white Christmas with its harp and string melodies.
