The sonic and spatial play from Carillon is something you rarely experience in a lifetime. Brought to you by brilliant, evocative artist Ken Quam, his music bridges the gap between music and emotions. It is a tough space to reach, and perhaps words alone can never do justice. I’ll give it a try, to dive into his masterful double A side called Venus. Sip your coffee, relax and stare into the distance for this one.
I would recommend excellent speakers, but preferably headphones for this aural experience. If this is a journey, he is guiding you through detailed sound bytes that are woven through core melodies. The artist from Baltimore wants you to hear the chimes, the ringing, the ambience in layers. Most importantly, what it emotes is what takes over the atmosphere. You can dream through this music, whether day or night-for there are moments to revel in.
The epiphanies in music
Carillon uses bold essence parts in Venus, yet splices layers which are very ambient and relaxing. The percussions never take over and dominate, yet are the pulse of the song. In the 5:30 of exhilaration you experience, there is still a lot of positivity that bleeds over after the song. Each tone has been selected carefully for what it stands for and creates, as an aura.
If you escape the perfect pillow that was Venus, get ready for a much slower wind down. This one is called Moon Knob, and it brings to effect some purpose filled modalities. It is much more deliberate, and focuses on longer refrains to accent the melodies that show their face. Like a deep dive into the liminal space of Avatar, you’re now beholding a world that is uniquely yours. What Carillon paints for you are the melodies that narrate the story of the place. The units are extremely impressive to experience, for they stand in their glory.
Melodic wrinkles in time
There is an East Asian flavour to the way the melodies flow. There might be no direct intonation, but parts do remind you of a place and time. Perhaps the most powerful compliment a song can get. Whether it speaks of it or not, it wraps you in a cocoon of visual magnificence.
Carillon brings musical development of different spectrums in this double A side. You can also check out his EP called The Whole Earth, which he released in 2020. There are a lot of characteristic observations he makes through music, and they are admirable to listen to. Crafting unique experiences like this is a power, and he wields the palette well.
