Bloomfield Machine’s ‘Copium’ : A Moment of Electronic Abundance

With Bloomfield Machine, you get perspectives. Their soundscapes are drone/ ambient worlds that in their abstract glaze offer sudden and astounding perspectives. Those moments of dazedness are for wordless contemplations, for thoughts that are boundless, without structure, for vast feelings. Their latest release is ‘Copium’, an abundance that you can travel through. Each song is a frame of thought, a progressing way of looking at things. You can also look at them as new worlds, something you can explore and make sense of.

The album seems to have some spring themes in it. Titles like ‘Clusterflux’, ‘Copium’, ‘A Little Bit of Everywhere’, and ‘The Beginning of Good’ indicate moments of rebirth, lightness, and softness in the mind. A feel-good warmth that posits a new beginning or a sense of abundance and perspective much like the season does. We see frames of melodic bloom (Clusterflux), quiet and gentle omnipresence (A Little Bit Everywhere), bountiful textures springing to life with a burning vitality (Copium), and a projection of vision, beauty, a resolution to begin fresh (The Beginning of Something Good).

They bring immersive scenery, chromatism, and a feeling of liveliness which tie into the spring themes as well. In ‘Aisle of White’, we see a slow release of sonic color alongside bird songs and post rock expanse. ‘Destinesia’ infuses beautiful synth flows into orchestral structures with a post-rock daze. ‘Simple City’ has a fresh synth dynamism that builds into something. A sense of simplicity is creatively constructed with futuristic beeps and lines. Simple modernism as a concept so elegantly revealed.

All these features are new and inventive features in the band’s soundscapes. Especially when you juxtapose them to their style in ‘Left to Our Own Devices’. But we still see that drone indulgence. Finding meaning in the mundane, music in the air. ‘Diminishing Returns’, ‘Hedonic Treadmill’, ‘We All Live in a Narcissistic Dream’, and ‘Train to Nowhere’ have their signature cerebral flows. That deep rational exploration to balance out the romance in the rest of the tracks. With both of them refreshing each other, it nicely captures the listening experience and range of The Bloomfield Machine. Listen Now!
