‘Black Out’: Self-Hate and Fleeting Thoughts
Lyrics & Build-up
The lyrics voice dark thoughts that seem to pass through the singer’s mind, but they don’t stick. The imagery conjured up is seemingly abstract and ephemeral, slipping from thought almost as soon is the image is conjured.
The lines in ‘Black Out’ seem to run into eachother to highlight this:
“…I see the wretched I
Ain’t got no alibi
Internal battles instigating
Contrition of the kind
That makes you squirm inside…”.
And on and on.
These lines also seem to hold a dark sense of self-hate or even loathing. They paint dark-grey pictures to seemingly create a dark mood. But then seemingly subvert this by not allowing that mood to fester but rather, flash by.
“…Rough stench of cigarettes
Feigned greetings of regret
Corrupted by creeping anguish
Reeking of self-disgust
Lack of trust…”.
Instrumentation & Wind-down
The instrumentation on ‘Black Out’ is characterised by insistent drums and an impatient percussion through the song’s first half. This fast-paced, frenetic energy breaks down by the second half, slowing down to allow more lucid imagery to flood in.
‘…Lucid dreaming
Crystal clear
Touched by darkness
Groped by fear…”.
From here on, as the song winds down, there is a sense of something being reawoken. Almost like someone who passed out is waking up, groggy and bleary-eyed. The soundscape here expands to include the darkness and this lucid light.
The song ends on a slow, yet lucid note with lyrics that acknowledge this awakening before the song abruptly ends.
“…Telepathic mocker interfering with your conscience
Catapulting into a reality of vices
Cosmic cleanse-”.
All in all, ‘Black Out’ by Goia Paranoia captures a sensation through soundscape and lyric, before allowing that sensation to run its course by the end. It reflects on the darker aspects of the psyche while also retaining the essence of a pure rock, mental, punk banger.
